From magnetic resonance imaging to MBST magnetic resonance therapy

MBST therapy is a therapeutic development based on magnetic spin technology. Magnetic spin technology is used worldwide for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for diagnostic purposes.

Images that go deep under the skin

MRI is one of the imaging diagnostic procedures and, to put it very simply, is a very large digital camera that takes pictures of the inside of the body. To generate these images, strong magnetic fields and high-frequency pulses are used to stimulate the hydrogen protons contained in organic tissue. The impulses transfer energy to the hydrogen protons, altering their physical state.

The procedure for an MRI scan in simple terms

The patient is positioned. The magnetic field in the magnetic resonance tomograph is switched on. This causes the hydrogen protons in the tissue, which were previously arranged completely randomly, to align along the magnetic field lines. Now the impulse is triggered and energy is transferred to the hydrogen protons. They are practically pushed and change their alignment. When the impulse is switched off, the hydrogen protons return to their original state as determined by the magnetic field. In the process, they release a portion of the energy they previously absorbed. These changes are measured outside the body and from this data the computer generates an image in different scales of grey with the help of special mathematical procedures .

Relaxation times – measurable biological stimulation

The energy released and the time required for the hydrogen protons to return to their original state can be measured. These times are called relaxation times. The different parameters (proton density, magnetic resonance relaxation times) of the tissue types (e.g. fat, cartilage, bone, fluids) provide the most important data for the contrasting image. The images taken in this way show the different structures in the body in such detail that experts can see whether there is an inflammation in a "photographed" area, for example, or whether the tissue is healthy or ill.

The goal of MRI – an image with high contrasts

MRI uses the different tissue parameters to obtain highly contrasting images for diagnostic purposes.

The MBST therapy system does not use magnetic spin technology to generate images, but rather to stimulate different processes in organic tissue at the molecular level.

Years of interdisciplinary research and development work were necessary to be able to use magnetic spin technology therapeutically. Proton densities and relaxation times were determined for different tissues by magnetic resonance spectroscopy. In cooperation with the Institute of Nuclear Physics at the University of Giessen tissue-specific relaxation times were measured. Together with the Laboratory for Medical and Molecular Biology of the FH Aachen, tissue-specific cell parameters were determined.

Based on these results, the MedTec research department developed indication-specific magnetic resonance therapy sequences, which are loaded onto MBST therapy cards and used in MBST magnetic resonance therapy systems. At the start of treatment, the magnetic spin applicators shall create resonance conditions with the tissue to be treated and thereby may stimulate different processes by transferring energy into specific cell groups.

Scientific data indicate various effects of MBST therapy. You can get more information about the options of an MBST therapy for your disease or complaints in a non-binding consultation in one of the certified MBST treatment centres.
